Dual Clutch Transmission Market – Introduction

DCT basically stands for dual clutch transmission. It can be treated as two manual gearboxes operating alternatively but are sealed inside one single box which allows it to use two gear shafts and two clutches (one for each 'box) in order to deliver the desired power to the wheels. When the dual clutch transmission is further divided into components, there are five main components to the gearbox - two gear shafts, two clutches, and finally an electronic control unit which aids in controlling the gear shifts by examining throttle position, road speed and engine load conditions among others.

The clutches are mounted such that they are concentric to each other and similarly the two gear shafts are also mounted is concentric manner. Dissimilar to a regular gearbox that carries all the gears on a single shaft, the dual clutch transmission has even numbered gears such as 2nd, 4th and 6th - first shaft dedicated works for the remaining - 1st, 3rd, and 5th, whereas the reverse gear works on the second shaft, with a dedicated clutch.

Market Dynamics

The key factors driving the dual clutch transmission market are the, better fuel efficiency, speed of shifting gears, loss of torque transmission from engine to wheels during gear shifting is removed and the gear shifting operation is done very smoothly. The key restraining factor for Dual Clutch Transmission is the price. There is nor part replacements in a DCT as the gear unit is totally sealed and if any issue occurs with the gearbox the whole unit has to be replaced, the price of each unit is very costly. Another factor that is anticipated to hamper the market growth is the ECU analyzing the gear shifting situations, sometimes ECU fails to analyze the situation which may lead to longer gear shift time span than usual.

Market Segmentation

The Dual Clutch Transmission market has been categorized into fuel type, vehicle class and geography. On the basis of fuel type the market is segmented into petrol, diesel, and others. Based on vehicle class the Dual Clutch Transmission market is divided into Class A/B, Class C, Class D, Class E, Class F and SUV (B, C, D, E). Among vehicle class, Class C, Class D, Class E, Class F and SUV are anticipated to hold the largest market share in 2017 and is anticipated to hold the major chunk of the market over the forecast period.

Dual Clutch Transmission Market: Regional Analysis

The North America held the largest market share in the year 2017, the people in North America prefer dual clutch transmission vehicles than compared to manual gear shifting cars. In a research conducted by Insights and Reports only 3.9% cars are manual transmission cars in the U.S. whereas Europe has 80% of manually transmission cars. Asia Pacific dual clutch transmission market is anticipated to hold the largest market share of dual clutch transmission in the near future due to the growing demand from countries such as China, Japan, India and South Korea among other countries. China is anticipated to hold the largest market in Asia-pacific due to the growing congestions and growing demand for the fuel-efficient cars the consumers are opting for dual clutch transmission vehicles.

Dual Clutch Transmission Market: Competitive Landscape

The key players in dual clutch transmission market are BorgWarner, WATON, Fiat Powertrain Technologies, FEV GmbH, Magna International, Graziano, Schaeffler Group, ZF Friedrichshafen AG and Eaton Corporation among other key players. ZF Friedrichshafen AG a German leader in manufacturing of automobiles parts has recently invested 100 million euros to open a new manufacturing unit in Brandenburg, Germany in order to produce 8-speed dual clutch transmission unit.
